Plants that absorb radiation, including EMF radiation, can be an important part of your whole-house EMF protection strategy. As a bonus, many of these same easy to grow common house plants have been shown to reduce harmful levels of other indoor pollutants.

EMF or electromagnetic fields is naturally occurring radiation. However, because of the prevalence of digital technology, EMF has also become a significant presence in our homes at levels that potentially pose health risks, especially for sensitive individuals. Combine that with increased chemical exposure from cleaners, synthetic materials, and poor air circulation, and plants may be the cheapest and most effective tool to improve our indoor environments and improve our health!

Sources of EMF Radiation

There are many natural sources of electromagnetic fields in our natural environment. For instance, the earth generates its own magnetic field, which allows animals such as fish and birds to use it to navigate. It also allows us to use compasses to orient ourselves. The sun also emits EMF, which is visible on Earth as natural light.

However, EMFs from manmade sources are increasingly prevalent in our indoor environment as well, due to our increasing use of technology. Cellphones, microwave ovens, and Wi-Fi routers all emit radiation. Plants That Protect You Against EMF Radiation

There are certain species of plants that you can keep in your home that are known to provide protection against EMFs. These plants work by absorbing the radiation before it can reach you. Basically, plants work best if they are placed next to the radiation source or at least between the source and people.

Fortunately, when the plants absorb EMF it does not cause the plant harm. Instead, it turns radiation into heat and causes the hydrogen in water molecules to break down. This is why plants that have higher water content are more effective in absorbing radiation.

Cactus

This is one of the best plants to keep around you if you are worried about the negative effects of EMF. It is known to absorb radiation from cellphone towers as well as home computers. If you think about it, these plants have adapted and thrived in environments where they absorb very intense solar radiation.

One great advantage of cacti is that they do not need a lot of maintenance. Unlike other plants, you don’t need to water them every day, but only when the soil becomes dry.

But you should keep them near a window to ensure that they get the light they need. Just make sure that they are within the line of sight from your computer so that they can do their work.

Aloe Vera

This is a succulent plant that is also known for its protective effects against EMF. Succulent plants store water in stems and/or leaves and this watery quality allows them to absorb radiation without damage.

Aloe Vera also has many medicinal benefits. The sap in its leaves has a soothing effect that you can use on mild burns. You can also use the sap on your hair and skin to moisturize it.

When you are growing Aloe Vera in a pot, make sure that it has plenty of drainage since the soil must be moist but not too wet. You should also ensure that it has sufficient light by placing it within three feet of a window.

Asparagus Fern

This is a decorative plant that you can grow in hanging pots that you can place around your home. Aside from its protective effects, it also has anti-oxidant properties that allow it to withstand damage caused by radiation.

However, it needs to be maintained properly to ensure it stays healthy. It has to be watered and fertilizer periodically added to the soil to ensure it has the nutrients it needs.

Mustard greens

This plant is a member of the cabbage family whose leaves are edible, with a strong bitter and spicy flavor. They are typically eaten steamed, stir-fried, or broiled, and can also be pickled.

These plants should ideally be grown outdoors. However, you can start them outdoors or under grow lights. When they have sprouted, you can place some in a pot to bring inside. They are effective at absorbing the background radiation in your home as well as giving you cleaner indoor air.

Stone Lotus

This is another succulent plant that is also popularly used for decorating homes. Its small size makes it ideal for keeping on your work desk. You can place it beside your computer to absorb excess EMF.

One advantage of the Stone Lotus is that it is low-maintenance. It thrives with minimal water and light. You can also plant it in a pot with stones that allow it to hold its moisture for as long as two to three days.

Betel Leaf

This is a vine that is mostly found in South Asia and is considered an ornamental plant. Aside from protecting you against radiation, the betel leaf also has many other medicinal properties, such as being anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and analgesic. It also has health benefits that include helping improve digestion, ease constipation, and alleviate respiratory issues.

The plant can be consumed in a variety of ways. The leaves can be crushed and taken as a paste or a tea by soaking them in water.

Betel leaf can be grown in containers, ideally on your balcony. They can also be grown indoors as long as they are in an area where there is partial sunlight. Although they thrive best in tropical and subtropical climates they can also be grown in colder climates in hanging baskets and with extra care.

Rubber plant

This is an evergreen that is mostly found in South and Southeast Asia. It has reddish or waxy green leaves and can grow up to 40 meters. Aside from protecting you against EMF it can also have a positive effect on the air quality in your home.

Rubber plants are grown in pots from cuttings and can be placed in areas with lower-light or indirect bright light. Make sure you keep the soil evenly moist to ensure that your plant thrives.

Snake Plant

This is another plant that can improve your air quality by removing volatile organic compounds from the atmosphere. It gets its name from the wavy pattern of the leaves, which looks like snakeskin.

The plant grows tall but does not broaden. They can thrive in bright light or near dark but ideally should have steady indirect light. Grow it in good potting soil and avoid over-watering. You should allow the soil to dry out in between watering.

The Snake plant thrives best in winter climates. Water it once a week during winter and once a month for the rest of the year.

Spider Plant

Like the Snake plant, the Spider plant is very easy to cultivate and creates an abundance of baby plants. The plant needs to be grown in a pot with soil that contains a lot of sand and is well-drained.

The soil should not be too moist since if it becomes too soggy, the plant may suffer from root rot. To avoid this, allow the soil to dry out after watering. They also need indirect bright light to grow.

You can also place the spider plant in a hanging pot. This will result in a cluster of younger plants growing at the end of its branches.
